In keeping with its longstanding commitment to the arts, Tiffany & Co. is proud to be a supporting sponsor of the Robert Rauschenberg exhibition on view at Tate Modern in London starting 1 December, 2016. This is the first posthumous retrospective of Rauschenberg’s most important works from his sixty-year career.
Known for pushing the limits of innovation, Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) mixed mediums including sculpture, painting and photography and incorporated everyday objects into his work, challenging the parameters of traditional art. Showcasing a diverse array of his collaborative works, the exhibit examines the pieces that made Rauschenberg one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art in New York where it will be on view from 21 May through 4 September, 2017 and then travel to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art later in the year.
The relationship between Tiffany & Co. and Rauschenberg commenced over 60 years ago when legendary Tiffany window designer Gene Moore commissioned him - as one half of the commercial design company Matson Jones - to design dramatic vignettes for Tiffany’s flagship store windows (1956–1958).
The window displays had a surreal quality that featured brilliant gemstones juxtaposed with nature, cinematic landscapes and a dramatic play of light and darkness.
These characteristics defined the duo’s window designs and would become the signature traits seen prominently in Rauschenberg’s later work, which will be on display at Tate Modern from 1 December through 2 April, 2017.
